The manufacturing process of engineered steel gives it exceptional performance. Through cold-forming or fabricated welded sections, it can achieve a high level of dimensional accuracy, with section tolerances of ≤2.5 mm and corner radii (R) of ≤0.5 mm.

This ultra-slim profile design enables engineered steel sections to reduce their cross-sectional size by more than 30% compared with aluminum sections under the same structural span, significantly enhancing the lightness and transparency of the building façade.

At the same time, engineered steel has an elastic modulus of approximately 206 GPa, which is nearly three times that of aluminum (approximately 70 GPa). This means that engineered steel undergoes much smaller deformation when subjected to external loads, ensuring the stability of large-span curtain wall systems under a wide range of environmental conditions.

Fire Safety Performance

Steel has a melting point of approximately 1,500°C, which gives it significantly better fire resistance than aluminum, whose melting point is approximately 660°C. In public buildings with high occupant density—such as airports, stadiums, and large shopping malls—fire safety is a critical design consideration. Thanks to its high melting point, Engineered Steel (精制钢) has become the preferred material for fire-resistant curtain wall systems in these types of buildings.

Environmental Performance and Sustainability

The internal "butterfly skeleton" consists of 2,040 steel components, and the project adopts a large-span Engineered Steel (精制钢) curtain wall system.

The primary steel mullions are 17 meters in length, with each member weighing approximately 3.5 tonnes, making lifting and installation particularly challenging. When conventional welded Engineered Steel (精制钢) sections are used, the fabrication cycle is approximately two months, while weld treatment is difficult and carries a relatively high risk of cracking during long-term service.

To address these challenges, the project team carried out multiple rounds of design optimization and construction planning. Ultimately, they adopted a new type of hot-extruded Engineered Steel (精制钢) profile, which maintained the same architectural appearance while successfully overcoming the fabrication and welding challenges associated with conventional welded sections.

03. Future Development

Artistic Architectural Forms

With continuous advancements in fabrication technology, Engineered Steel (精制钢) is capable of realizing increasingly complex and artistic architectural forms. This enables architects to pursue more distinctive building appearances while enriching the urban landscape with unique architectural expressions.

Examples include curtain wall systems inspired by natural forms, as well as free-form curved and twisted geometries derived from abstract artistic concepts.

Multifunctional Integration

Future Engineered Steel (精制钢) curtain wall systems will increasingly integrate functions such as solar shading, natural ventilation, daylighting, and acoustic insulation, creating comprehensive building envelope systems.
